Government updates travel advice for Canadians attending Sochi 2014 Winter Games

Canadians planning to attend the Sochi Olympics in Russia should limit their “use of public transportation that is not affiliated with the Games” according to a new travel advisory from the Canadian government issued on Thursday (January 30).

They are warned about travelling outside of the designated Olympic sites: “Be particularly cautious. There remains an ongoing insurgency in the North Caucasus, located approximately 150 kilometres from Sochi.”

This and other advice was issued by Lynne Yelich, Minister of State (Foreign Affairs and Consular) in a press release Thursday.

“We continue to advise all Canadians travelling to the 2014 Winter Games to take sensible precautions and maintain a high level of vigilance at all times and in all places,” said Minister of State Yelich. “Although consular services will be available on the ground, individual travellers need to take responsibility for their own safety.”
