It takes three nights to honour the best in Canadian film, television and new media.
The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television awarded trophies in 47 categories in Toronto Tuesday night, at a gala hosted by comedian Steve Patterson that awarded the best in news, sports, documentary, lifestyle, reality and digital media categories.
Last night’s gala, hosted by Martin Short, honored the best in Canadian drama, comedy and children’s programming. Some of the winners included the science fiction series Orphan Black taking a total of eight awards, including best direction in a dramatic series for an episode entitled “Endless Forms Most Beautiful.”
It’s star, Regina-born Tatiana Maslany, was also nominated for a Golden Globe in January for her compelling portrayal of several women, revealed to be clones in the conspiracy series.
Best direction in a youth or children’s program or series went to the Degrassi episode “Time of My Life.” Degrassi is one of the longest-running and most internationally successful TV programs from Canada. it’s a serial teen drama based on the life and times of the students at the fictional Degrassi high school in Toronto.
The next gala event on Sunday March 9th, will honour the best in film and television. Martin Short will host, with star presenters including Jessica Pare, aka Mrs. Don Draper from the American TV series, Madmen, and singer-songwriter Serena Ryder.
Director David Cronenberg will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award to be presented by long-time collaborator, Viggo Mortensen.
