The government body that regulates Canadian broadcasting, the CRTC, has warned two porn channels that they may not be airing enough Canadian content or closed captioning.
Broadcasters in Canada are required to air 35 per cent Canadian programming over the course of a year and 90 per cent of it should have captioning or sub-titles. The former rule is to try to ensure a certain amount of Canadian material is aired and that broadcasters do not simply purchase U.S.-made material.
If broadcasters do not comply with the rules they risk losing their licences or having them renewed for shorter terms.
The X-rated specialty channels AOV XXX Action Clips and AOV Maleflixxx will be questioned about their apparent non-compliance as well as their ownership structures.
Excerpt from the CRTC document,
“BUILDING ON SUCCESS – A POLICY FRAMEWORK FOR CANADIAN TELEVISION “The Commission wishes to ensure that a range of diverse programming and a sufficient number of hours to attract audiences to Canadian programming will be available, especially given the high proportion of U.S. entertainment in the peak time schedules of private broadcasters.” |
