Bieber booed at Canada’s top music awards

Canada handed out its top music awards, the Junos, last weekend with twin sisters, Tegan and Sara the top winners and pop idol Justin Bieber being booed. Tegan and Sara won three trophies for top group, pop album and single of the year for Closer. Backstage they did a parody of that song, calling it Cold, which greatly amused Canadians who have suffered unusually low temperatures this winter.

Bieber won the Fan Choice award. It’s not clear whether fans booed because he did not attend the televised gala or because of all of his recent brushes with the law.

Arcade Fire, Drake, and Michael Bublé were also absent because of other engagements. Arcade Fire won Album of the year for Reflektor. That group sent a pre-recorded thank-you message.

Astronaut Chris Hadfield, famous for singing and tweeting from Space when he headed the International Space Station, introduced Bachman-Turner-Overdrive, who were finally inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.  Members of the group didn’t get along for a long time making the induction impossible until now. They are famous for hits like You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet and Takin’ Care of Business.

Other winners included Serena Ryder, who won two Junos for artist and songwriter of the year and violinist James Ehnes, who also took two awards for classical albums.
