Decision to call Quebec election, massive defeat for premier and government

Listen

The massive defeat Monday (April 7) of the ruling Parti Quebecois government in the predominantly French-speaking Canadian province of Quebec may have caused relief in the rest of Canada, but the reasons for the defeat are more complicated than the issue of separation from Canada by the province.

A politician with decades of experience, Quebec’s Premier Pauline Marois called the election last month, based on public opinion polls showing strong support for the party. It was an opportunity to increase her election victory 19 months earlier against the province’s Liberal Party.

Marois hoped to turn her government’s minority status into a strong majority. But a number of stumbles by both the leader and the party, foreshadowed her defeat.

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda has a report.
