Canada’s Official Opposition NDP party leader Thomas Mulcair is urging Conservative government MPs to vote against the government’s proposed Fair Elections Act because it is “profoundly anti-democratic”.
The government says the controversial legislation will eliminate voter fraud and control election campaign spending, but the opposition parties say the legislation will take the vote away from hundreds of thousands of Canadians, open loopholes in election spending, and clear the way for the government to win in the federal election in 2015.
“Our message to the Conservatives who talk a lot about the importance of our democratic institutions is it’s time to walk the talk. It’s time to show that you actually do care, because this bill [C-23] still contains several things that are profoundly anti-democratic,” Mulcair said in the foyer of the House of Commons on Monday (May 12).
