Sugar Sammy wins Quebec’s top humour award ‘Olivier de l’année’

For the second year in a row comic Sugar Sammy has been voted comedian of the year at the annual “Gala Les Olivier” awards for excellence in comedy in the predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec. This award, voted on by the Quebec public, was given to the comedian during the gala awards show on Sunday (May 11).

Last year, the Montreal-born comic not only won Comedian of the Year, but the Best Show award (voted on by the industry).

He has made inroads into both the English and French communities with his bilingual comedy shows.

Sammy is also the first artist chosen by Comedy Central India to tour the country, visiting Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi in March 2013 with his English/Hindi/Punjabi comedy show.

The Olivier awards are organized by the province’s comedy industry association, L’Association des professionnels de l’industrie de l’humour (APIH) [Association of humour industry professionals]. This year’s edition is the 16th annual celebration of Quebec humour.

Among the other winners were Best Show – André Sauvé’s “Être”, Discovery of the Year – Simon Leblanc, and Best DVD – Louis-José Houde’s “Le show caché 2″.
