Working with the concepts of “Last Nations” and Indigenous “First Nations”, Chilean-Canadian artist Carolina Echeverria and First Nation Mohawk artist Kakwirakeron (Ross) Montour are the focus of a new exhibition “At the Woods’ Edge” starting Saturday (June 21) in the Mohawk community of Kahnawake, just beside the city of Montreal.

The exhibition will begin with an Immigrant canoe being welcomed by a Mohawk canoe, followed by the opening of the exhibition at the Rapid Water Gallery in Kahnawake, and continue until July 13. It follows two other exhibitions Echeverria has held called “Native Immigrant”.

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda spoke with Carolina Echeverria about the exhibition, the concept of the “Native Immigrant”, and the similarities between the art of Chile’s Brigada Ramona Parra and that of Canada’s Indigenous artist Norval Morrisseau.
