Canada’s team played a great game in the U-20 Women’s World Cup last night beating North Korea 1- 0, in a goal set up by Amandine Pierre-Louis.

“We were relentless,” Janine Beckie, told CBC after the game.  She was at the far post to put in the pass by Nichelle Prince in the 65th minute for the game’s only goal. “It feels amazing. We’re moving on.”

Before an enthusiastic crowd of 13,000 fans in Montreal’s massive Olympic stadium, the Canadians managed the goal in a very tightly-played match.

CBC sports reporter Andie Bennett was there last night.  She described the Korean DPR’s team as playing “a very structured precision-type game”.

Asked about the victory, Nichelle Prince said, “It means a lot.”  She told CBC, “Coming into this tournament, we wanted to inspire little girls and inspire Canada, and I think we’re on our route to doing that.

“We still have a lot of work to do in this tournament. We’re half way there. We’re ready for what’s to come.”

Team coach Andrew Olivieri, a former member of the Montreal Impact team, says this experience is essential in preparing for next year’s Women’s World Cup.

Canada finished second in Group A and plays the Germans, who were first in Group B, on Saturday in Edmonton, Alberta.

North Korea finished first in the four-team group on goal differential and will play the United States on Saturday in Toronto.

The tournament is underway in 4 Canadian cities, Moncton, Montreal, Toronto and Edmonton.
