Canada’s Official Opposition calls on government to support human rights in Hong Kong

Canada’s Official Opposition NDP party is calling on the Canadian government to “support the right of all residents of Hong Kong to peaceful expression and demonstration, and call on Chinese authorities to exercise restraint during this period.”

In a statement released Monday (September 29) the Official Opposition’s foreign affairs critic Paul Dewar said “We are hopeful that the democratic aspirations of Hong Kong residents for universal suffrage will be peacefully achieved.

“New Democrats believe that freedom of expression and association, including the right to peaceful protest, are fundamental rights. We stand in solidarity with all people who aspire for democracy, peace and the protection of human rights.”
