The prize was created in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch, a reporter who turned to business and philanthropy. He named it in honour of his late wife, literary editor Doris Giller.

This year’s jury included Canadian author Shauna Singh Baldwin, British novelist Justin Cartwright and U.S. writer Francine Prose. They reviewed 161 books novels and short-story collections published in English.

The winner will be announced at a gala in Toronto on November 10. The runners-up will each receive $10,000. To be considered, a work must be published in Canada and be written by a citizen or permanent resident.

You can learn more about the shortlisted books at a special site set up by the public broadcaster, CBC.
