Premier of Canada’s smallest province to resign

The premier of Canada’s smallest province of Prince Edward Island, Robert Ghiz, announced Thursday (November 13) he will resign as premier and as leader of the ruling Liberal party as soon as a new leader is chosen.

The surprise announcement came only 15 minutes after the premier had informed the Liberal caucus. Ghiz has been premier for eight years and leader of the province’s Liberal party for 12.

Asked if he was planning to enter federal politics (there is a federal election scheduled next year) he did not rule out the possibility sometime in the future, but said “Don’t expect to see my name on the ballot in the next federal election.”
