Canada’s Ethics Commissioner decides not to investigate matter she won’t describe

Canada’s Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson concluded she had no evidence on a matter brought to her attention to justify an investigation, but gave few details about what the matter actually was about.

In a statement released Thursday (December 4) the Commissioner wrote: “I found no evidence to support the allegation that was referred to me,” Commissioner Dawson said. “I decided not to initiate an examination or inquiry, as I do not have reason to believe that there was a contravention of the Conflict of Interest Act or the Conflict of Interest Code for Members of the House of Commons.”

According to a press release from her office: “It was alleged that a Member of Parliament, a minister and a deputy minister had intervened to have a monetary penalty withdrawn. The penalty had been issued by the enforcement arm of a department of the Government of Canada to a corporation whose director was a constituent of the MP, in relation to an allegedly unauthorized event.“

According to the website of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner “Mary Dawson’s status as an Officer of Parliament ensures that she is independent from the government of the day.”
