Jerusalem 3D, the Imax film

Jerusalem, the movie in 3D, is screening at IMAX cinemas in 60 cities in 9 countries around the world this season

Daniel Ferguson, the writer, director and one of the producers of the film, says “Jerusalem is transformative”.  The old city, at the heart of three religions and the ongoing exploration of archeologists, raises many questions..

“Why Jerusalem?  What is it about this place that is sacred to half the people on earth?”

Awarded ‘Best Imax Film’ and ‘Best Cinematography’ from the Giant Screen Cinema Association, Jerusalem 3D features aerial shots that would be impossible to shoot today.  Shot in 2010, the team received permission to film from above, after gently and consistently chipping away at the bureaucracy, and not taking ‘no’ for an answer.

Ferguson says Imax films are supposed to take you places you could never go, and in Jerusalem the film delivers with scenes from inside the Dome of the Rock and other sites off-limits to many visitors to the city.

Benedict Cumberbatch provides the voice-over taking viewers, in, over and under the history and the present of this legendary location.  Ferguson says several Israelis and Palestinians told him they’d lived there all their lives but they’d never seen all that the film reveals about the region, from Bethlehem to Masada.

The Imax 3D format is a Canadian innovation that came out of the work at the National Film Board of Canada, and the plans for Montreal’s Expo ’67.
