Cosby controversy comes to Canada

Bill Cosby‘s show will go on.  That’s the message from the 77-year old American comedian who is at the centre of a growing controversy following several accusations of alleged sexual assault over the years, including 3 women with new allegations levelled today.

More than 15 women have come forward in recent months to describe similar events in which they were often drugged and then sexually assaulted by the man who was revered in American comedy.

The first of three Canadian shows is scheduled for this evening in Kitchener, Ontario, followed by a show in London, Ontario, and the final show in Hamiliton, Ontario on January 9th.

Several groups are planning protests and the premier of the province, Kathleen Wynn, said in view of the very serious allegations against Cosby, she would not go to any of his performances until they are sorted out.

Kitchener resident, Aatif Baskanderi, is offering the six tickets he bought for his family for $600, at half price, after he and his family decided they did not want to attend the show due to the allegations.

Cosby, was one of the first black actors to co-star on American television in the 1960’s.  His credits include the much-loved role of Dr. Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show from 1984 to 1992.  He has never been criminally charged in connection with any of the sex assault allegations, and he has denied them, including through his lawyer.

Two shows in suburban New York were cancelled in December.  There will be an alternative show in Kitchener this evening called ‘Voices Carry’, that Cosby ticket-holders can attend instead, in support of survivors of sexual violence.
