Nominees for this year’s film and television awards were announced Tuesday (January 13) by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television in a morning press conference in Toronto.
“It’s an exciting year in Canadian film and TV and digital. I love to say that word. It sounds like we’re doing porn – digital,” said comedienne Andrea Martin as she unveiled the nominations. Martin will host the awards show on March 1.
Among feature films, Xavier Dolan`s Mommy leads with 13 nominations including best motion picture (feature), as well as best direction, and best screenplay. It stars the Quebec actress Anne Dorval. Dolan won the Jury Prize at Cannes last year along with French film director Jean-Luc Godard.
David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, starring Julianne Moore and Canadian actress Sarah Gadon, is nominated in 11 categories.
There are 128 categories for film, television and digital media, with the vast majority (97) dedicated to TV alone.
The Canadian Screen Awards were launched in 2013 after Canada`s Genie film awards and the Gemini television awards merged. Canadian film awards first started in 1949 and the television awards started in 1980.
According to the Globe and Mail newspaper`s Simon Houpt the merger “is an attempt by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television to bring together the red carpet glamour of feature films and the populist appeal of TV: particularly important in a country where domestic films represent a tiny percentage of the overall box office and TV shows rarely make it into the weekly Top 30 viewing chart.`
