More extreme weather in Canada

While the southern west coast is experiencing mild temperatures above freezing, most of the rest of southern Canada is experiencing Arctic-like weather

Windsor, the most southerly city in the country, shattered its cold weather record today with a reading this morning of -26 and wind chill making it feel like -35.  Similar temperatures were felt across most of Ontario and Quebec and in some parts of the maritimes.

In Toronto, Ontario on Sunday a young man in a wheelchair froze to death overnight after he couldn’t get into his house.

A Via Rail passenger train the left Toronto for Montreal with 200 passengers on board broke down en route and left passengers herded into a couple of cars which still had lights, but with no heat or running water for three hours in the freezing weather. Via Rail is offering refunds for the trip.

After a series of winter storms and blizzards, the maritime provinces, especially Prince Edward Island, are getting blasted with yet another storm today.

In Newfoundland, high winds battered the west coast and Northern Peninsula throughout the night, with gusts of over 160 kilometres/per hour recorded in parts of Gros Morne National Park

The small island province, and parts of New Brunswick and norther Nova Scotia, are expecting more heavy snowfall between 30-60 cm, blown by winds  gusting up to 75 kilometres an hour. This comes on top of almost 3 metres of snow so far this season.

Halifax Nova Scotia meanwhile has had heavy snow turn to rain creating a whole nes set of problems and police are advising people to stay home today.

Throughout the maritimes and Newfounland, there are many office and school closings, and airport and other travel cancellations.
