Amidst a Canadian government push to toughen anti-terrorism laws and give Canadian authorities more powers, the country’s Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney announced on Wednesday (March 11) that Canada will deport an alleged terrorist.
Arrested on Monday, Jahanzab Malik was accused of planning to use remote controlled bombs to blow up the U.S. Consulate and other buildings in Toronto’s financial district, authorities told a federal Canadian tribunal.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says the arrest follows a lengthy investigation by security and anti-terrorism personnel.
It is not immediately clear why Malik will be deported rather than charged.
RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda has a report.
