The RCMP is hiring 30 officers from its regular members to staff the new Parliamentary Protective Service, a division that will assume control in June 2015.
Interested candidates must commit to a minimum of three to five years. They will be responsible for ensuring the safety of members of Parliament, Senators and the general public.
They will patrol Parliament Hill, assist with visits by foreign heads of state, and provide assistance to the House of Commons and Senate security.
This service was created following the October 22 shooting in Ottawa, when Michael Zihaf-Bibeau ran onto Parliament Hill, hijacked a ministerial car and stormed the centre block with a knife and a gun.
Zihaf-Bibeau was killed, but not before shooting one guard in the foot and arriving very close to where PM Stephen Harper was meeting with his Conservative caucus, and another room where the New Democratic Party MP’s were holding their weekly meeting.
