Taylor Swift honours Alanis Morrissette

Taylor Swift, currently on the American leg of her world tour, was joined by Canadian singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette on-stage Monday night at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.

Swift introduced Morissette saying, “She defined the music of her decade.”

“You could get really, really mad if you wanted to.”

Together the two belted out Morrissette’s mega-hit song “You Oughta Know” to a very appreciative crowd.  Swift then credited Morrissette’s song-writing with influencing her own.

“She inspired a generation of confessional female singer-songwriters who all of a sudden felt like you could actually say these raw feelings that you had,” Swift said. “You could actually sing about your real life, you could put detail to it, you could get really, really mad if you wanted to.

“And I think it’s fair to say that so many of the female singer-songwriters of my generation, including myself, would not write the way that we do without her and her music.”

This is the 20th anniversary of Alanis Morrissette’s album “Jagged Little Pill”.  It produced 6 singles, topped the charts in 10 countries, and was number one in Canada for 24 weeks.

It garnered 5 Grammy Awards for Morisette, who was 21 at the time.  A record that was only broken by Taylor Swift at the age of 20 for her album, ‘Fearless’.

“Jagged Little Pill” was the number one best-selling album of the 1990’s and Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it among the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
