Soapbox race draws a crowd in Montreal

Soapbox racing is the new event in Montreal, the location for so many years, of the only Formula One race in North America.  And while the custom-made cars don’t go nearly as fast, they can draw also draw a crowd.

‘Fast is good but outrageous is even better’ is the slogan for the race, down a steep hill in the centre of Montreal. And there were some outrageous vehicles. My favourite had to be the ‘pothole’ soapbox. The creators claimed it was ‘so Quebec.’

There were others inspired by ‘Kraft Dinner’ the much-loved comfort food of so many Canadians. And the more local concoction known as poutine. (That’s a plate of French fries with cheese curds on top, that is then drenched in hot gravy.)

There were homages to favourite movies and characters, such as ‘Back to the Future’, and ‘Ghost Busters’ and of course an entry inspired by local hockey team, the Montreal Canadiens. and another known as the ‘Flying Plumbers’. as well as the Turbo Lego team.  A great time was had by all!
