Doctor’s second murder trial begins in Quebec

Jury selection began Monday in the second trial of a Quebec cardiologist charged with the murder of his two children.

Guy Turcotte’s first trial in 2011 ended with a jury finding him not criminally responsible for the deaths of Olivier, 5, and Anne-Sophie, 3, who were killed in 2009.

Prosecutors say they will call 30 witnesses, including Isabelle Gaston, the mother of the children.

In the prisoner’s box Monday, Turcotte, 43, was sombre and impassive. He briefly closed his eyes when the judge said he was “accused of having killed his two young children.”

The new trial on first-degree murder charges was ordered in 2013 after Quebec’s Court of Appeal found the judge in the first trial erred on a point of law.

The Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear Turcotte’s attempt to
have the new case dismissed.

The trial in Saint-Jerome, 50 kilometres north of Montreal, is expected to last three months.
