Fall arrived early this morning, at 4:22 am to be exact, and while the Montreal region is still enjoying summer conditions with temperatures in the mid-20 degree range, the bountiful harvests, the changing colours of the leaves, and the chill in the air in the evening, are all signs autumn really is upon us. Not to mention the shockingly shorter days September brings!
The pumpkin above is going to the northern community of Espanola, Ontatio for the ‘Pumpkin and Fibre Arts Festival’ in mid-October.
Markus Schwabe, the host of CBC’s morning radio program in invited listeners to suggest what might become of the 21 kg (46 lb) pumpkin, “When you grow a giant pumpkin, you want people to enjoy it,” he said.
Eventually it was decided to send the pumpkin to Espanola, just west of Sudbury, where it will be used to promote Espanola’s festival.
“We’ve got a fabulous community celebration celebrating everything pumpkin….and we just thought it was a perfect fit.” said Cheryl Kennelly of Community & Economic Development for the town of Espanola.
We’ll follow some of the harvest festivals around the country, particularly my favourite, the Pumpkin boat race in Nova Scotia!
