A nasal spray could take the sting out of this years’ flu vaccine for some children in the province of Ontario. The spray is being introduced as an alternative to the usual injection in the arm for children between 2 and 17 years old.
Extra protection in nasal spray
Canada has a country-wide, annual campaign to inoculate people against what it predicts will be the most likely flu viruses to be circulating in a given year. There are three for adults, and children who get the nasal spray will have protection against an additional B-strain of the flu that mostly affects children and youth.
Parents would have the choice between the nasal spray and the more traditional shot in the arm.
Up to 20 per cent of Canadians get the flu every year. About 12,000 go to hospital and about 3,500 die from it annually.
