Charles Richard-Hamelin won the silver medal and 25,000 euros in prize money at the world‘s most prestigious piano competition in Warsaw, Poland

The 17th edition of the Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, which takes place every five years, was open to pianists born between 1985 and 1999.

Richard-Hamelin played Chopin’s Piano Concerto in F minor Op. 21.

Richard-Hamelin, a 26-year-old classical pianist from Montreal, is the first Canadian to bring home one of the top prizes at the international competition,

In yesterday’s final stage, Richard-Hamelin played Chopin’s Piano Concerto in F minor Op. 21. A jury of 17 members announced the winners this afternoon. Seong-Jin Cho of South Korea took the gold, and Kate Liu of the United States won bronze.

Another Canadian also made history, however, by making it into the final top 10. Sixteen-year-old Yike (Tony) Yang finished in fifth place, taking home 10,000 euros in prize money.

Charles Richard-Hamelin is originally from Lanaudière in Québec, He obtained a bachelor’s degree in performance from McGill University in Montreal, in 2011 and a master’s degree from the Yale School of Music in 2013 and received full scholarships in both institutions

He is now studying at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal with André Laplante. His first solo CD, which will feature late works by Chopin, was released on the Analekta label in September 2015.
