Michael Harris and the 2015 federal vote

Michael Harris is the author of ‘Party of One: Stephen Harper and Canada’s Radical Makeover‘. In this, his most recent book, Harris tells the stories that didn’t quite make the headlines and talks to the people who who worked in various positions in government and the bureaucracy of government, some of whom were crushed for opposing Harper’s will.

Harris connects the dots in a darkly revealing profile of the man who ruled Canada for the last 9 years. He says he was not surprised with Stephen Harper’s defeat, but was relieved.

“If we had not refreshed our democracy, I believe, with Robert Marleau and Peter Milliken, long-time speaker of the house, and Sheila Fraser, the auditor General, that the democracy would have been lost, and we would have been given something that was very dark in the exchange.”

From the muzzling of scientists, to massive omnibus bills, to devastating cuts to veteran’s services, the Harper government de constructed what many Canadians held dear. The Conservative proposal of a hotline to report “Barbaric Cultural Practices” was perhaps the nadir of the election campaign, and the Liberal slogan that ‘In Canada, better is always possible’ was what voters were grateful to be reminded of.
