Heart’s Content and the transatlantic cable’s 150th

Heart’s Content, Newfoundland is getting ready for the last week of July when they’ll be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the first transatlantic cable.

“Connected and Contented”

It was on July 27th, in 1866 that what was known as the Great Eastern arrived in Heart’s Content. The cable was strung from Valentia Island off the coast of Ireland.

It was the beginning of a new era in communication. Heart’s Content cable station operated for 99 years, closing in 1965. In 1974 the station was declared a provincial historic site.

The federal and provincial governments contributed $34,000 (Cdn) each to the celebration in the community on the south-east of the Atlantic province. “Connected and Contented” is the theme of the festivities, which include a re-enactment of the first cable landing on July 27th, at 11 am.
