Cirque du Soleil’s “Luzia” debuts in Toronto

Luzia, the newest show from Cirque du Soleil, is having its Toronto debut this evening. This comes following its successful premiere in the Cirque’s home-base in Montreal.

“I went back to something more raw about circus…”

The show, inspired by Mexican culture, was directed by Quebec actress, writer and theatre creator. Brigitte Poupart. ‘I went back to something more raw about circus…You see people, that’s the main thing,’ Poupart told CBC news.

“I wanted something intimate, to break the fourth wall, immersive, emotional, [to show] humanity onstage, community,” Poupart said.

Luzia is Cirque du Soleil’s first directed by a Canadian woman. Poupart said, “I went back to something more raw about circus. That’s what we see: acrobatics. The set is really pure — not that much elements, makeup and costumes,” she said.

Brigitte Poupart helped Luzia‘s performers infuse their acrobatic amazements with a deeper connection, according to Benjamin Courtenay, who garnered rave reviews during the recent Montreal run.

“This show especially, what we’ve really dug into is not only acrobatic — high-level acrobatics — but also a very touching sort of scene, stuff that comes at you a little emotionally and can make you feel something.” Courtenay said.
