“Kanak” is a dog with a special calling these days. His owner, Mélanie Bédard, realized there was something unique about the family pet, something she could share in her work. Then Detective Mélanie Bédard convinced her boss that Kanak would make a great addtion to the team, as a “comfort dog”, one who helps people, especially children in stressful situations. Terry Haig spoke with Detective Bédard to hear more about Kanak, and what he does.

Missing and murdered indigenous women and girls are finally getting their due. The Canadian government announced a national inquiry into the circumstances and treatment of families in reporting, or trying to report their loved-ones missing or murdered for many years. Carolynn Bennett, the minister for Indigenous and Northern Affairs introduced the five aboriginal commissioners this week, and the team are now working of the structure of the Inquiry which begins September 1st, 2016. We’ll hear what Mary Teegee, a native woman from British Columbia, thinks of the news.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is running a contest with some lovely rewards for the best photos of a Canadian wilderness experience. It is the hope of the Nature Conservancy of Canada that people will get out into our great countryside and enjoy it, and it also hopes to raise awareness of the work it does to acquire and protect big tracts of land. To find out more about the endeavours, Lynn Desjardins spoke with the group’s spokesperson, Andrew Holland.
