(Leonard Linklater/CBC )Plans to build a winter road to the Arctic community of Old Crow in Canada’s northwestern Yukon territory,  have been cancelled.

Chief Joe Linklater of Old Crow’s Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation said the snow won’t be deep enough to build a proper road.

Linklater said the road is needed to bring supplies in for various projects.

“We want to build a new store, we’re working on a foundation for a multiplex recreation-type centre, and additional housing,” he said.

Linklater said he is unsure if the planned projects will go ahead, now that a decision has been made not to build a winter road this year.

Approximately 245 people live in Old Crow. It’s the only community in Yukon without road access.
