Finland set for New Year’s freeze

After a relatively mild Christmas week, temperatures are expected to be well below freezing across Finland on Tuesday, New Year’s Eve.

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s (FMI) forecast, skies over southern and central areas of the country will be mostly clear and sunny.

It will be relatively cloudier further north, where local snow showers are also expected on New Year’s Eve.

FMI’s forecast suggests that while it will be windy on Tuesday morning and during the day, winds will weaken in the evening.

On New Year’s Day, a precipitation system is expected to bring fresh snow to many southern and central areas, but areas on the southern coast will likely see a mix of snow and rain. Meanwhile, some northern areas may also get some snowfall on Wednesday, according to the FMI.

Temperatures on New Year’s Day across much of the country are expected to range between -5 and -10 degrees Celsius. At the same time, temperatures will hover just above or below zero in the south.

Up north in Finnish Lapland, temperatures could get as low as -15 degrees on Wednesday.
