Treasurer of Whitehorse broomball club charged with fraud and theft

A Whitehorse man is facing criminal charges relating to an alleged theft from the Yukon Broomball Association while he was treasurer for the organization.
Craig Mitchell has been charged with one count each of fraud, theft over $5,000, and use of a forged document.
A court document obtained by CBC News states his alleged actions happened between 2021 and this past January, and include withdrawing funds through ATM and debit transactions totaling more than $80,000.
Whitehorse RCMP told CBC News that the total amount allegedly taken is roughly $86,000.
The court record also states that Mitchell created false financial reports for the association and that he tried to pass one off as genuine.
If convicted, Mitchell could face up to 14 years in prison for the fraud charge alone.
The other two charges have a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.
It’s not clear whether Mitchell is still involved with the broomball association. The organization’s website does not name its current treasurer.
The association has yet to respond to an interview request, and Mitchell declined to comment.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 9.
