The Square wins at Toronto film fest

A gritty documentary about Egypt’s revolution won the People’s Choice Documentary award at the Toronto International Film Festival which wrapped up on the weekend.

The Square by Egyptian-American director Jehane Noujaim uses hand-held amateur footage gathered in Tahrir Square to document sit-ins, protests and riots that began two years ago. The uprising eventually led to the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak.

Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave won the People’s Choice feature film award.

Almost 300 feature films were screened over 11 days at the Toronto International Film Festival. It attracted stars like Scarlett Johansson, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt and Pierce Brosnan.
