Leadership of military observer mission in Ukraine to be taken over by Canada

Three Canadians will lead an Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) military observer mission in the central European country, according to a media report by Postmedia News.

Citing Defence Minister Rob Nicholson Wednesday (April 30) Postmedia reports the three Canadians from the Directorate of Arms Control Verification will lead the nine-member team which includes members from Ukraine, France, Moldova and the United States.

Also on Wednesday the government announced it is redeploying a Canadian war ship, HMCS Regina, to the NATO mission formed in response to the Ukraine crisis, abandoning its anti-terror post in the Arabian Sea and marking an apparent end to Canada’s naval participation in the region as part of the U.S.-led Operation Enduring Freedom.

In addition on Tuesday, Minister Nicholson had announced six CF-18 fighter aircraft would leave Wednesday morning for Romania “as part of the Government of Canada’s contributions to NATO measures to reassure Allies in Central and Eastern Europe.”
