Weird weather persists in Canada

Scorching temperatures are setting records in Canada’s east and west, while central provinces are unusually cool. The reason for the abnormal summer weather could be extreme fluctuations in the jet stream, say weather experts, and that could be related to climate change.

Summer is no joke in Canada

Canadians take summer very seriously after they get through winter which is long, very cold and snowy in most parts of the country. In the central provinces of Quebec and Ontario July and August are usually warm, with a few short, hot spells where the temperature climbs to around 30 degrees Celsius. So far, July has been cooler than usual.

In contrast, the usually temperate eastern province of Newfoundland and Labrador has had a heat wave with today’s temperature expected to reach 30 degrees. That has only happened nine times in the past 72 years.

Temperatures have also soared into the 30s in the western cities of Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary.

Meteorologists say the culprit seems to be the jet stream in the upper atmosphere which has an unusual shape and seems to be stalled in one position.
