Money could hurt hijab-wearer dismissed by judge

Canadians were so outraged that they started a crowd funding campaign to raise money for a woman who was dismissed by a judge because she would not remove her hijab. The problem is that if she receives the money it could jeopardize her social welfare benefits.

Rania El-Alloul is a single mother of three who receives payments from the government to help her support her family. The crowd funding campaign has raised more than $40,000 to help her pay for legal fees or possibly a new car. That sum could put her above the poverty limits that allow her to qualify for government benefits.

Those who raised the money are trying to find ways to transfer the money so that her benefits will not be cut off.

El-Alloul had gone to court to try to have her car released. It was impounded because her son was driving it without a valid license.

El-Alloul indicated she would file a complaint against the judge, but the public broadcaster, CBC, reports that a third party has already done so on her behalf.
