Terror trial brings new revelations

The trial of a couple accused of plotting to bomb the British Columbia legislature in 2013 continues in Vancouver

John Nuttall and his wife, Amanda Korody, are facing four terror-related charges in B.C Supreme Court.

In a recording played Thursday in court, Nuttall rued a missed opportunity to murder hundreds of soldiers and their loved ones at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt in Victoria in May, 2013.

In comments made to an undercover officer in a covert video, Nuttall said he could have killed 225 soldiers and their families with two sniper rifles and some grenades.

Nuttall and his wife were later arrested for allegedly planting three pressure-cooker bombs on the lawn of the B.C. legislature on Canada Day, 2013

The two accused terrorists previously told an undercover officer they were inspired by al-Qaeda propaganda and wanted to avenge what they viewed as the mistreatment of Muslims overseas.

Both have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Meanwhile in Ottawa, politicians continue to debate what role the Canadian military should play in stopping the spread of radical extremism across the Middle East.

The governing Conservatives have introduced a motion to extend the Canadian mission in Iraq by a year and to broaden the mission to include airstrikes in neighbouring Syria.

The Opposition New Democrats want Canadian soldiers pulled from the area immediately.

The Liberals suggest they could remain in place but only to provide training for existing security forces.

Both opposition parties are calling for Ottawa to increase and expand the humanitarian support being provided Iraq and Syria

The NDP and Liberals say they will not support the motion. However, the Conservative majority in parliament ensures the motion will pass.
