Trump Tower safe, streets re-opened in Toronto

Trump Tower in Toronto has put the name in the spotlight in Canada’s largest city, but not in a positive light.  The last two days in the city’s down town core were challenging for commuters and pedestrians as main streets were blocked off for people’s safety.

An antenna at the top of the 65-storey tower was the source of the problem. An employee reported it seeing it swaying on Monday morning and the streets below were evacuated and closed as a precaution.

Toronto mayor, John Tory demanded accountability from the company yesterday saying road closures are a “big cost” to the city.  He requested they “do a better job of communicating to the media and to the public because of one of the frustrations [on Tuesday] was the lack of information.”  He said engineers from out of town had to flown in to look at the antenna.

Neil Labatte, is president and CEO of Talon International, the Toronto-based real estate firm responsible for the building. He said its employees were the ones who alerted police.

“Talon’s technical specialist was quickly dispatched to the area, and found that the concerns were unsubstantiated,” he said of the swaying antenna. “Talon is continuing its due diligence and is now awaiting a final report from its technical team. As soon as Talon has the final report, the police department will be notified.”

The Trump Tower is named after real estate mogul and Republican U.S. presidential primary front runner Donald Trump. While it is operated by the Trump Hotel Collection, which is presided over by Trump and his children, he does not own the building.
