Contemporary work wins emerging artist competition

Patrick Cruz  of Guelph, Ontario has won a $25,000 purchase prize offered by the RBC banking company for his work called Time allergy. This is the 17th annual competition which seeks “to help young artists trying to move from emerging talent to established artist.”

A jury of artists, gallery directors and curators chose the painting based on “his brave approach, maximalist aesthetic, and wild graphic sensibility.” The painting will be bought and added to the RBC corporate art collection, as will those of two other top finalists. They will be paid $15,000 each for their works. Another 12 finalists will receive $2,500 each.

RBC is the largest bank in Canada and its corporate art collection includes more than 4,000 pieces spanning more than one hundred years of Canadian art.
