Sophie Grégoire Trudeau frank and funny with Katie Couric

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau shared her views on everything from breastfeeding to women in politics with American journalist Katie Couric in an interview released today on Yahoo.

Displaying the candour that Canadians are becoming accustomed to, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, described herself as the “wife of the Prime Minister”. “There is no actual title,” she explained. “We could be a little more progressive,” she said, “but please call me Sophie.” That warmth and homour carried through the almost 14 minute interview with Yahoo’s Global News Anchor.

“Diversity is the richness”

Grégoire Trudeau, a former TV culture reporter and yoga teacher, went on to explain the difference between the role of the First Lady in the United States, and the lack of a defined position in Canada. She shared her admiration for Micelle Obama and said that in Canada one has to make the role one’s own.

When asked about the Martin Luther King luncheon she attended where her spontaneous performance of a song she composed went viral, Grégoire Trudeau chuckled and explained that everyone before her had sung a song with a hopeful theme, and that she was simply following suit.

She aslo explained a cut-away moment on election night, when the camera caught her looking at her husband in what some described as an adoring manner. “That’s funny,” she says, “because the moment where I was ‘gazing at him adoringly’ was really about the moment, I mean I was proud of him and what we had accomplished but I couldn’t believe the love and the suport and the vote of confidence we had gotten from our fellow citizens. THAT I was deeply touched by. I mean I love him but…” she says as she laughs at the idea.

When asked about the recent spike in on-line searches for ‘how to move to Canada’ following a recent American Republican party debate, she is quick to respond, “Listen, I’m here with open arms; c’mon over!”

But in the meantime, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau will be stepping into the international spotlight again, attending the state dinner at the Whitehouse in their honour, on Thursday, March 10th, 2016. More photos to follow.
