Mike Sullivan told CBC News that the last time he saw his friends, doctors Elana Fric-Shamji and Mohammed Shamji, they laughed and finished each other’s sentences. Elana Fric-Shamji’s body was found in a suitcase December 1, 2016 near an underpass in Vaughan, Ontario and her husband has been charged with first-degree murder.
The murder victim died from strangulation and blunt-force trauma. The couple have three children.
‘A vibrant, dedicated’ doctor
Colleagues at the Scarborough Hospital told CBC that Fric-Shamji was a vibrant, dedicated family physician. She also taught at the University of Toronto and was a member of the health policy committee at the Ontario Medical Association.
Shamji is a Toronto neurosurgeon who is said to have been kind to everyone. Just last week, he tweeted support for his wife’s work with the association. In 2014, he posted about 11 years of “married bliss.” His wife also tweeted enthusiastically about the relationship.
Divorce was in the works
However, Fric-Shamji recently confided that she had filed for divorce.
The hospital where the accused works issued a statement expressing shock and sadness by the news of the events.
