Eco-friendly lobster traps

You have perhaps heard of “ghost nets”, the gill nets, or even long-line fishing gear that gets lost in the sea but keeps on killing fish for months even years. Sometimes the same thing happens to lobster traps.

Now there’s a new plan to prevent unnecessary deaths of lobsters in lost traps. Each trap will have a section of biodegradable twine, so that if a trap becomes lost, the section will eventually degrade and allow the lobsters to escape.

Other regulations this year include larger escape mechanisms, and larger minimum carapace size. Lobsters under 72mm will have to be returned to the water.

Lobster is Canada’s most valuable seafood export being shipped to countries around the world and contributing as much as $1-billion in export sales. There are about 10-thousand licenced lobster fishermen in 45 fishing areas, one of which is closed as a conservation measure. Each zone has its own particular season and duration for fishing
