Canadian satellite RADARSAT-1 stops working more than 17 years after its launch

Listen

Developed and operated by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), RADARSAT-1 was a sophisticated satellite equipped with a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instrument that could take images through clouds, and mapped crops, water, and the first complete mapping of Antarctica.

Canada’s first earth observation satellite was launched in November, 1995.

In March, the satellite experienced a “technical anomaly” after working 12 years beyond its expected 5 year mission. Attempts to restore the satellite have failed.

Up until this failure RADARSAT-1 had collected and distributed an amazing amount of information and data, and “outstanding images” of earth.

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda spoke to Michel Doyon, Flight Operations Manager at the Canadian Space Agency.
