SNC-Lavalin has for years used a secret internal accounting code that former employees say was for bribes on projects in Africa and Asia. The World Bank has already barred the engineering firm from bidding on contracts it funds for ten years.
Code words were used on contracts for a division called SNC-Lavalin International Inc., according to an investigation by the public broadcaster, CBC and the Globe and Mail newspaper.
“Sometimes it was ‘project consultancy cost,’ sometimes ‘project commercial cost,’ but [the] real fact is the intention is [a] bribe,” said former SNC-Lavalin International engineer Mohammad Ismail.
