Liberals re-elected in B.C. provincial election, leader defeated

To the surprise of pollsters, the Liberal government of the Pacific coast province of British Columbia was re-elected Tuesday night (May 14), and with a strong majority. The party won 50 of the 85 electoral ridings.

Liberal Premier Christy Clark in her victory thanked voters saying: “You have humbled us tonight with this opportunity and the tremendous obligation you placed on our shoulders. We will honour what you have bestowed on us, and together we will make British Columbia better.”

However, Premier Clark failed to hold on to her riding of Vancouver-Point Grey to high-profile NDP candidate David Eby by 785 votes. It’s expected she will seek a seat in a byelection in a safer Liberal riding.

Not one poll predicted the overwhelming Liberal victory that occurred.

Angus Reid forecast in its last poll before the election that the NDP was the party of choice for 45 per cent of decided voters and leaners, with the governing Liberals in second place with 36 per cent support.

The actual results show the incumbent Liberals won 44.4 per cent of the popular vote, while the NDP party of Adrian Dix won 39.5 per cent.
