Canadian privacy laws inadequate for digital age, says watchdog

The law which protects Canadians’ privacy “is not up to the task of meeting the challenges of today-and certainly not those of tomorrow,” said Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart Thursday.

The Federal Court should have the power to impose stiff penalties when organisations run afoul of privacy laws, she said and not just deliver a slap on the wrist as they do now.

Stoddart has tried to name and shame some of the world’s largest companies into respecting the privacy of Canadians but feels this hasn’t really worked. Hitting companies’ bottom lines might be more effective, in her view.
