Court refuses quest to identify sperm-donor father

The Supreme Court of Canada has refused the appeal of Olivia Pratten who wants to know the identity of her biological father. Sperm donations are solicited in Canada by heterosexual couples where the male partner has fertility issues or by single women who want a child or by lesbian couples.

Pratten had argued that offspring like her should have access to information about their biological father in the same way as do people who are adopted.

Providing such information would amount to state intrusion into the lives of many people ruled the Court of Appeal in the western province of British Columbia.

The Supreme Court of Canada is the highest court and it refused to hear an appeal of that decision and, as is customary, it did not give any reasons.
