Poor Canadians die sooner after heart attacks

Poor Canadians are twice as likely to die as are affluent Canadians 10 years after they have a heart attack, according to a study by the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences.

Exercise appears to be the deciding factor. Poor Canadians exercise less. It’s not clear why.

1,368 residents in the province of Ontario who had heart attacks between 1999 and 2003 and survived more than a year were followed ten years later. Of those in the lowest income group, more than a third had died. Of the highest earners, only 15 per cent had died.

Poor Canadians suffer higher risks for several other illnesses from mental illness,  to obesity, asthma, diabetes and infant mortality.
