Wolf chases motorcyclist

A man on a motorcycle took photos of a wolf as it chased him along a highway in Kootenay National Park in the western Canadian Rocky Mountains. This is a highly unusual occurrence, according to park rangers.

Tim Bartlett was testing out a new bike on a highway when he almost hit a wolf. He swerved to avoid the animal and then doubled back to see if he could get a photograph of it.

“As soon as I got to where that was, it jumped back, and the chase was on,” said Bartlett.

The wolf crossed a lane of traffic while attempting to catch up to him.

“It sort of sped up initially; it gave a real good burst of speed,” said Bartlett. “And then after that it just trotted along beside me, but it probably got within three or four metres.”

The wolf kept up with Bartlett for about a kilometre and then the man sped up and drove away.

The wolf stopped in the middle of the road before heading back into a nearby forest.

Michelle Macullo of Parks Canada said this is not normal wolf behaviour. It is rare to see a wolf, never mind to be chased by one.

The wolf may have become habituated to people. This is an on-going problem because people ignore the rules to not feed wild animals.
