The number of foreign visitors to Canada will continue to drop if there is not more promotion, says the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Tourism is one of Canada’s largest generators of GDP, contributing close to $80 billion to the economy every year.
15.9 million tourists came to Canada in 2012, down from 20 million in 2002. That made Canada the 18th most visited country where it had been the 7th.
The drop in tourism is connected to a lack of promotion according to the Chamber’s president Perrin Beatty. He notes that while other countries are spending more on marketing, Canada cut the budget of the Canadian Tourism Commission by nearly $60 million.
Unless more is done Beatty says the tourism industry will continue a serious decline.
